Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus extra for kneading
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 5 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 pc egg beaten
  • Raisin Optional

Instructions

  • Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet to prevent sticking.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Use two knives or a pastry blender to cut in the butter until the mixture takes on a crumbly texture.
  • In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together the milk and beaten egg. Gradually incorporate this mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring just until everything is moistened.
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead it briefly, about 5 to 6 turns, just until it comes together. Shape the dough into a round, approximately 1/2-inch thick. Cut this round into 8 wedges.
  • Place the scone wedges onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake them in your preheated oven for around 15 minutes, or until the tops are a beautiful golden brown.
  • Enjoy your freshly baked scones warm, perhaps with a dollop of clotted cream or a smear of jam.

Notes

For a richer scone, you can substitute half and half for milk. Serve these scones with clotted cream on the side.
