Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon agave syrup or your preferred sweetener
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ceremonial-grade matcha powder
  • 4 –8 ounces unsweetened soy or oat milk
  • 1/3 cup hot water ensure it is below boiling; refer to your matcha packaging for the recommended temperature

Instructions

  • Warm the milk. Pour your choice of oat or soy milk into a microwave-safe mug and heat it in the microwave for about 60 to 90 seconds until it’s gently warmed. Alternatively, warm it on the stovetop in a small saucepan over medium heat or use the steam wand of an espresso machine. Adjust the milk quantity based on your preference for a stronger or milder matcha latte.
  • Sift the matcha. Using a fine mesh strainer, sift the matcha powder into a small bowl—ideally, a traditional matcha bowl—to remove any clumps and ensure a silky texture.
  • Whisk with hot water. Add the hot water to the matcha powder, along with the sweetener if you’re using one. With a bamboo whisk, briskly whisk the mixture in a zigzag motion, creating a smooth, frothy consistency. This should take about 15–20 seconds.
  • Combine and serve. Pour the whisked matcha mixture into the warmed milk. Stir gently to blend the flavors thoroughly. Sip and enjoy your creamy, invigorating matcha latte!

Notes

  • Matcha Powder: Opt for ceremonial-grade matcha for superior quality and flavor. Look for a vibrant green hue, a fresh earthy scent, and a finely ground texture. It should taste smooth and earthy without bitterness.
  • Hot Water: Maintain the water temperature between 150°F and 160°F for the best results. Alternatively, follow the temperature guidelines on your matcha packaging for precise recommendations.
  • Storage: Enjoy this vegan matcha latte fresh and warm for the best experience. If storing, transfer to an airtight jar and refrigerate for up to 48 hours.
  • Reheating: Warm leftovers gently until heated through, or serve over ice for a refreshing chilled version.
