Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper or to taste
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon paprika or to taste
  • 4 garlic cloves minced
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine all the ingredients and stir until well mixed. Set the pan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to ensure the flavors meld together evenly.
  • Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and allow the sauce to simmer uncovered for about 30 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent sticking and to help the sauce thicken to your desired consistency.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning by adding more sugar or spices if desired, balancing the flavors to suit your palate. Once thickened, remove the pan from the heat and let the sauce cool completely to room temperature.
  • Transfer the cooled sauce to an airtight container, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to two weeks. Use as a versatile condiment for grilling, dipping, or marinating your favorite dishes.

Notes

Fresh off the stove, the sauce may have a noticeable vinegar aroma and a hint of spiciness, but its flavors will mellow and harmonize beautifully as it rests in the refrigerator.
